An April 2008 report by the Institute of Medicine says
that older individuals are more concerned about care for three chronic
conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol or hypertension. This suggests that
older people need a different type of healthcare setting than younger people.
However another survey by y Zogby International and the
American System for Advancing Senior Health found that while baby boomers look
for specialists, these doctors are not easily accessible and most of the times
they have to settle for a general practitioner.
This issue will
become compounded as the Institute of Medicine says there are few geriatric
specialists in the US and their number is decreasing by the day.
