Obese Patients Sent to Zoo for Getting Scans
The obesity crisis confronting the NHS was highlighted when it emerged that doctors are requesting zoos and vets to handle scans for obese patients who cannot get their tests done on NHS equipment.
The Daily Mail reported that CT scanners used for large animals are ideal for grossly obese individuals. However these instances may be humiliating for patients as observed by Riaz Dharamshi, a geriatric registrar at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, West London. The latter said that he was asked to refer patients to the London zoo when he was training.

In his blog, Riaz wrote that while this may be embarrassing for patients, “the problem of having patients too big to scan is not one we face all that often.”

The Royal Veterinary College in London also revealed that it had received requests to scan obese patients, but that it would require licenses to perform the scans on humans.
