Metformin Remains the Best Drug to Treat Diabetes

A new report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine has revealed that metformin is the best oral medicine available for the treatment of Type II diabetes. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine analyzed the risks and benefits of six different oral drugs available in the market and found that not only does metformin has fewer side effects, but it is also cheaper than the other drugs available.

Apart from metformin, researchers also looked at the effects of sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, meglitinides, DPP-4 inhibitors, and GLP-1 receptor agonists in 166 different studies.

“Although the long-term benefits and harms of diabetes medications remains unclear, the evidence supports the use of metformin as a first-line agent”, lead researcher Wendy Bennett said.
