Mentally Ill Cannot Find Place in Private Hospitals

by Rajashri on May 25 2009 9:08 PM

A survey conducted by the Times of India newspaper has found that many private hospitals refuse to admit mentally ill patients who are left with no recourse except to go to government ones.

The survey conducted on the occasion of World Schizophrenia Day, found that just five nursing homes in Mumbai were willing to admit patients with the disease.

"The middle-classes and the upper middle-classes that don't feel comfortable going to public hospitals don't have many avenues,'' social psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty told the paper.

The survey highlights the fact that Indian hospitals are ill-equipped to face mental illnesses and must be upgraded to tackle these diseases, which are on the rise thanks to lifestyle patterns.
