Kids’ Waistlines Have Expanded by 7 Centimeters Over Last 30 Years

Waistlines of children below 17 years of age have grown over the past three decades with the Shape GB's National Childrenswear Survey showing that waistlines of boys having grown by 7cms while that of girls having grown by 8cms.

Measurements of more than 2,500 children between ages of 4 to 17 years were taken as part of the study during 2009-10 with a 3D body scanner. The waistlines of boys grew from an average measurement of 61.49cm in 1978 to 70.02cm today while that of girls grew from 59.96cm to 70.2cm.

Being physically very active is the mantra to prevent pediatric obesity rather than concentrating efforts at restricting energy consumption.

Other measurements also have seen a similar growth with the average height among 11-year old girls increasing by 1.88 percent to 148.78cm, up from 146.03cm. The average height of a 11-year old boy also increased from 144.63cm to 148.18cm.

The measurements were made by using a 3D scanner since it does not compress the skin like a traditional tape and thereby giving a 2cm bigger measurement.
