Kid Barred from 'perfect Attendance' Disco After Missing School Due to Dad's Death

by Rajshri on Dec 15 2009 9:03 PM

Five-year-old Sean Watson was barred from attending a school disco for children with perfect attendance records as he was absent for seven days when his father passed away. His father Michael Watson died from an aggressive form of throat cancer causing his son and daughter to miss about a week at Ryecroft Primary School, Bradford, West Yorkshire.

When Mrs Samantha Watson contacted the school about the disco, she was told her kids would not be given an exception for absence for bereavement.

"I then found out that they were not allowed to go because they had time off so I rang the school office to check this was the case and the woman said 'bereavements count'," she said.

Jayne Clarke, the head teacher of the school said it was a genuine error on the part of the school. "It's not instead of all the normal Christmas parties; it's in addition to that as a reward. We are trying to build a community that attends school and regards school as absolutely vital for the future," she told the Daily Telegraph.

A spokesman for the school said the error would not have occurred if the mother had spoken to the right person at the school.
