July 1 is Doctors’ Day

July 1 is observed as doctors’ day in India to observe the birth anniversary of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, a legendary physician, who was also the second Chief Minister of West Bengal.

While the Indian Medical Association generally observes this day with great pomp and splendor, the IMA chapter of Ludhiana has decided to observe this one as Black Day in protest of the Clinical Establishment Bill.

“This Bill is neither in favour of the people nor the medical fraternity. This move is aimed only to benefit big corporate hospitals. The National Council, which is proposed to be the governing body as suggested in the Bill, will comprise people drawn from Unani, Siddha, nursing and paramedical bodies," said Dr Narotam Dewan, IMA-L president.

The Clinical Establishments Bill, 2010, makes it mandatory for all clinical establishments to treat patients who are in a serious situation. Doctors feel the Bill fails to help medical fraternity and will increase the costs of treatment.
