Husband and Wife Doctor Duo Save the Day for Many Mothers and Babies
Doctors Abhay and Rani Bang , husband and wife are ordinary individuals but with an extraordinary purpose in life.
Following the footsteps of Gandhi, in whose Ashram Dr Bang had spent his growing years, has inspired him to work on the health issues plaguing women and children in the poorest regions of India.

To attract other fellow people in this purpose, Dr Bang  is launching  ‘Save the Children's No Child Born to Die campaign’ in London. "We began by going to the people, by listening to them and what they needed," he said.

"Out of desperation we asked 'What can we provide?' The only thing that was there in the villages of India was the people, the women themselves."

The duo have contributed to healthcare  by imparting healthcare training to local village women so that they can take on the role of community health workers. With these changes, doctors have managed to cut infant deaths in the far-flung villages around the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra state by about 75%.  The community health workers have further taught other women in the villages to look for signs and symptoms of illness in children.

When Dr Bang was asked why he preferred to help people in the poorest areas of India, he recalled a conversation his father had with Gandhi, while expressing Dr. Bang’s  intention to study economics. "If you want to study economics go to the villages of India."
