A new survey by the UN agency on drug control has revealed that the number of drug addicts testing positive for HIV is on the rise.
The survey of 6,000 drug users ion India found that many of them shared needles with their fellow users and also borrowed needles, which is a leading cause for HIV.In addition to this many addicts also have unsafe sexual habits, the report added. Just 20 percent used condoms when indulging in casual sexual activity.
''Most of these people are sexually active. They rarely have safe sex so there is risk of transmitting to spouses and partners,'' said Dr Suresh Kumar, author, UNODC Regional Drug Report.
