Fat Jab in the Face Kills Woman

by Rajashri on Jun 13 2009 8:57 PM

37-year-old Rachel Soanes died of fat embolism after fat from her buttocks was injected into her face, an inquest has heard in the UK.

The plumping surgery involved a process where fat from her buttocks was injected into a vein in the face. Rachael felt dizzy as her body was unable to get enough oxygen. However it took two hours to shift her from dermatological unit to intensive care at St Thomas’ Hospital in central London.

Nurse Linda Cooper revealed that she died minutes afterwards. “There was no recovery area. Out-patients don’t generally require a high level of care after procedures," she added.

Pathologist Prof Sebastian Lucas said the risk of embolism was minimal and hence Rachael was not apprised about it. "Once fat got into her lungs, there was nothing anyone could have done," he added. Coroner Dr Harris has opted to give a narrative verdict.
