Excessive Care may Worsen Patients' Condition

by Rajashri on Aug 13 2009 12:03 AM

A new study led by Carl May, professor of medical sociology at Newcastle University says that some chronically ill patients receive excessive treatment, so much so that it actually worsens their condition.

"It includes organising doctors' visits and laboratory tests. Patients may also need to take on the organisational work of passing basic information about their care between different healthcare providers and professionals," Dr May said. "Patients are thus overwhelmed not just by the burden of illness, but by the ever present and expanding burden of treatment."

The paper also cited a case where a heart failure patient refused to go to a specialist clinic saying he had already made 54 such visits, but to no avail.

The paper also says that badly coordinated care may lead to wastage of resources. The details appear in the latest edition of the British Medical Journal.
