Eating Disorders Among Youth

by Rajshri on Apr 24 2010 9:47 PM

The freedom prevalent in Western society as far as dietary choices are concerned, may sometimes turn into a curse. This is because youth of today have become obsessed with trying to maintain their figures at all costs.

The prevalence of eating disorders continues to climb mainly due to peer pressure, celebrity hang-ups and media hype. It is estimated that 68% of 15 year old females are on a diet. Disorders like bulimia and anorexia are so common among teens that doctors are struggling to deal with them.

It is here that parents can play an important role in helping their kids. Children need to be given confidence about their body shape and size. While being overweight is not a good condition, parents must let their kids know that it is not a crime to have a little fat.

They must also help them in maintaining a healthy lifestyle so they do not fall a prey to other illnesses.
