Czech Republic Reports First H1N1 Flu Death

by VR Sreeraman on Oct 23 2009 6:23 PM

The H1N1 flu virus has claimed its first victim in the Czech Republic as a woman died in hospital in the western city of Karlovy Vary on Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman told AFP. //

A woman "with a serious chronic disease and confirmed H1N1 flu died today after a short hospitalisation," said Zdenka Markova.

She added that the woman had suffered from serious heart trouble too.

"The flu complicated her condition, unfortunately with fatal consequences," said Markova.

The CTK news agency quoted a public health officer from the hospital as saying the woman had come to see a doctor last week but refused to stay in hospital, and that her condition had worsened in the following days.

The patient, who had had an unspecified organ transplanted in the past, suffered from very low immunity, said the public health officer, who was not identified by name.

Markova said that a man with the H1N1 virus was also in hospital in Karlovy Vary "in a serious clinical condition," and that he too had other serious health problems.
