Chennai Corporates Take to Taichi to Beat Stress

The Chinese psycho-physical exercise, Taichi, is catching up among overworked and stressed out corporate executives in Chennai.

A regular session of Taichi near Chennai's famous Marina Beach has become a popular spot for white and blue collared managers who are learning the art of unwinding after a daylong physical and mental strain.

Almost all of them vouch that Taichi has given them a feeling of relaxation.

They also said they have experienced peace within through this exercise.

Fifty-eight-year-old Swaroopa, an Assistant Vice-President with a company is one of them. For nearly 35 years, she has been spending nearly 10 gruelling hours at her desk. After talking to Taichi, she has made a new beginning.

"To a great extent it is Taichi which helped me realise that enough is enough. I didn't want the fast pace of the corporate world. You earn so much, but you sleep so less. And Taichi makes you think. It's very slow and meditative. There is a lot of balance and there is a lot of inner harmony," claimed Swaroopa.

Many Chennai executives have followed in Swaroopa's footsteps. The practitioners admit that while they earn a lot of money, they don't have peace of mind.

It is Taichi, they say has enabled them to cope with hypertension and other lifestyle ailments like insomnia.

"It makes you feel that your mind, body and everything have come together at the end of it. So health-wise definitely it has benefits," said Arvindan, another executive.

Taichi dates back to 5000 years and is almost like a slow dance similar to Indian yoga-based movements.

People find this extremely useful, as it does not require heavy physical exercise or great strength.
