Vedanta Resources, a London-based mining company, is planning to set up Chhattisgarh's first super-speciality cancer hospital at Raipur. The company has sought expression of interest (EOI) from reputed firms for construction of the hospital, complete with modern technology. It will be spread over 40 acres in the state capital here, the company said Friday.
"Vedanta is keen to begin work on the cancer hospital and the super speciality health care centre projects in Raipur by December or January," Pramod Suri, an official of the company, told IANS.The company will also construct two primary cancer diagnostic centres in two more Chhattisgarh towns -- Korba and Kawardha.
Vedanta Resources has metal and mining operations in Asia, Africa and Australia. The company holds 51-percent share in the Korba-based Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (Balco) that produces 3.5 million tonnes of aluminium annually.
In September this year, the company had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Chhattisgarh government for setting up the cancer hospital on the outskirts of Raipur.
A vast majority of people in the mineral rich state still do not have basic healthcare facilities. The hospital in Raipur and the two centres in Korba and Kwardha are expected to help the disadvantaged groups.
"We would like to begin construction at the three locations simultaneously," Suri informed.
