Britons polled on their favorite food have voted the bacon sandwich to the top spot, with taste buds bowing in delight to the traditional treat.

Britons were asked to rate the foods that gave them most pleasure as they hit their taste buds.

Forget healthy options - the bacon butty with tomato ketchup or brown sauce won with almost a fifth of the votes as 19 per cent of people crowned it their favourite taste sensation, reports the Daily Express.

There was no room for exotic foreign dishes as traditional British foods filled the top 10.

Chips with salt and vinegar came second with 12 per cent of the vote.

The research was conducted for bacon connoisseurs' week, which starts next Monday.

Organiser Tina Mulholland said: "Our research shows that when speed is essential a bacon sandwich not only fits the bill but bacon's strong, savoury sensation in the mouth is extremely comforting."
