Baby Born With Heart Outside Chest Struggling for Survival

by Rajashri on Sep 1 2009 10:40 PM

Vibha Devi is a four-day old baby born with a rare condition called Ectopia Cordis, which causes the heart to be abnormally placed inside or outside of the body. Most infants born with this condition die within days, but his father is desperate for Vibha to live and has taken the baby to Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

"He is stable and is being treated for infection. Once the infection goes, we will do the surgery," said Dr A.K. Bisoi, a cardiologist at the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Department at AIIMS. "His parents are lucky the baby is still alive even after infection as it has spread to all body parts. We are trying our best to save the baby."

Dr Bisoi added that no infant with this defect had survived in India so far, but if Vibha should survive in the following weeks, a team of surgeons is ready to operate and create space for the heart.
