by VR Sreeraman on Aug 8 2007 12:58 PM

The Apollo Group of Hospitals Monday announced the launch of Apollo telemedicine services at the Apollo Medical Centre, Muscat, linking the centre to all hospitals of the group in India.

Ahmed Bin Abdul Quadir Ghassani, under secretary, health affairs, ministry of health, Sultanate of Oman, inaugurated the telemedicine services at the Apollo Medical Centre, Muscat in the presence of Anil Wadhwa, India's ambassador to Oman and K. Hari Prasad, CEO, Apollo Health City, Hyderabad.

A statement issued here said this facility linked the people of Oman with the world-renowned doctors across the Apollo hospitals including the hospitals in Hyderabad, Chennai and New Delhi.

At the inaugural function, live tele-consultation was demonstrated between Muscat and Apollo Health City, Hyderabad. Oncologists at both places discussed a complex cancer case.

'Apollo telemedicine network provides ready access to specialists and super-specialists in India for consultation and for second opinion services. Apart from video consultation, specialists in India can review the investigations of patients in Oman and give a comprehensive opinion to the patients,' said the statement.

This is a useful tool for post-treatment follow-up for patients undergoing advanced treatment in Apollo Group of Hospitals. These patients can consult their respective doctors from Muscat, thereby avoiding travel.

This link also facilitates 'tele-continuing medical education' programmes for the medical fraternity in Oman. Experts in various fields will link up with the Omani medical fraternity to exchange views and experiences and to deliver lectures on recent advances in the field of medicine.
