Indian Woman Donates Kidney, Liver, Cornea and Heart Valves to Save 6 Lives

A 45-year-old woman from Nizamabad district, Hyderabad, India donated her organs to six persons after being declared brain-dead. Lingampeta Sharada, a daily wage labourer, had complained of headache and was admitted to a local hospital and was later referred to the Global Hospitals in the city.

“The local hospital found it complicated and referred Sharada to us for treatment. But before we could start treating her, we found out that she was brain-dead,” said, Dr Hirendranath of Global Hospitals.

The news was a big shock to her family but they have showed courage and agreed to donate her organs. “We can’t get back our mother, but will feel lesser pain when we think that she has given a new life to six others. My mother left us and our family will suffer. But we feel proud of her, as she brought happiness to the families of those who received her organs,” said a grief-stricken Suresh, son of Sharada.

The doctors retrieved her kidneys, liver, corneas and heart valves after four hours of surgery. Later, in a nine-hour-long surgery, the liver was transplanted in a 54-year-old man from Delhi. The kidneys were donated to a 31-year-old woman and to a patient at the Deccan Hospital. Corneas were sent to the LV Prasad Eye Institute and heart valves to the Innova Hospital.

Anuradha Jeevandan, Co-ordinator said, “It’s heartening that more people are coming forward to donate organs. Sharada’s family readily agreed to donate her organs after we counselled them about the impact it would make on others.”
