Four infants died at Ludhiana Civil Hospital during ‘delivery process’ on Sunday. Just three days ago, the new mother-child wing was inaugurated at the hospital. Family members of the victims lodged a protest, claiming that delivery was carried out by ‘class IV employees and no gynaecologists were present during the delivery’. They alleged that the infants died due to negligence of hospital doctors and staff.
According to hospital sources, the babies died during or just after the delivery. Ludhiana Civil Hospital head Subash Batta said the kids died during the delivery process but has denied any negligence on its part.
“Babies died during the process of delivery,” hospital’s gynaecologist head Alka Mittal said. According to Batta, the hospital has started an investigation into the matter to find out the reason for the tragedy.
Mittal said the pregnant women were taken to the old wing of the hospital before delivery as the Operation Theatre in the new mother-child wing was not operational. But she said that the deaths did not take place due to negligence.
