28-year-old Nicky Avery, who bravely battled breast cancer for four years, has died. He thus becomes the youngest man in Britain to succumb to the deadly disease.
Avery was diagnosed in 2006 after his girlfriend convinced him to go to doctors after a lump in his chest continued to grow, "I was quite ignorant of the fact a man could get breast cancer. Doctors at the hospital said, "Mr Avery, you have got cancer". It was as quick as that. I thought at first they had misdiagnosed me. ," Nick told the Daily Mail at that time.
Avery underwent radical mastectomy, intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In March 2007, doctors gave him the all-clear. However the disease reappeared last year and this time he was unable to beat it.
Dr Anne Robinson, consultant oncologist at Southend Hospital and breast cancer specialist, who treated Avery said his spirit as he fought the disease was an inspiration to one and all.
