18 Month Baby’s Collar Bone Fracture Eludes Diagnosis for a Week

by Savitha C Muppala on Aug 4 2008 4:27 PM

An 18 month old child suffered excruciating pain due to a fall from the couch in his home. The hospital had dismissed it as a case of tissue damage, despite a thorough X-ray examination.

A specialist finally plugged the problem to a collar bone fracture, during the third visit of the child to the hospital, when two doctors, a trainee doc and a nurse at the Edward Infirmary in Wigan had given him a clean chit.

This diagnosis happened a week after the injury, doctors had thought the boy was crying because of a bruised chest and damage to the arm. Two days after this diagnosis, they had noticed a bulge from the child’s shoulder. A specialist later confirmed that the X-Ray image showed a fractured collar bone. The parents have lodged a complaint at the hospital.

Mrs Robinson, 33, said, "I felt stupid going back and going back. I just felt like a paranoid mother and they must have been thinking the same. But you know your own child and it's disgusting.”

A spokesman from the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust who are evaluating the case said, "Due to there being a formal complaint, we are not actually able to comment on the situation until the investigation has been completed."
