1.6million Children in UK Live in Severe Poverty

In UK about1.6million children live in deepest poverty. According to research conducted by 'Save the Children', 1 in 10 children in Northern Ireland, or about 40,000 children, are living in severe poverty and this number is unacceptable high and is expected to increase further in 2011. Fergus Cooper, head of 'Save the Children' in Northern Ireland said that many more children will fall into severe poverty if the government fails to take urgent action against the unemployment and inflation. He said, "It was scandalous that in the 6^th largest economy in the world children were growing up in severe poverty."

The report also revealed that there is a higher likelihood of severe poverty among children in Northern Ireland where no-one is employed. 29% children in families where nobody is working are affected by severe poverty, while in families where at least one parent works 4% of children are affected by poverty. The figures also show that the risk of children being affected by poverty is higher among children living with single parents. The problem is worse in western countries with 12% children being affected by severe poverty, while compared to 7% in the eastern countries.
