Isobel Jeffery, a 13-year-old girl, is suffering from Alzheimer's-like dementia in what is a rare type of disorder seen in kids.
The girl exhibits all the symptoms of dementia, which are generally seen in adults aged over 60 years, which include memory loss, nightmares and hallucinations.
"When she was nine she suddenly started slurring her words and was less clear in her talking. It sounded like she was drunk," said her mother and full-time carer Nicola. "Now it is a relentless loss of skills and mobility. We've been told that she will slowly deteriorate. She has undergone extensive tests but the outcome is always the same. he prognosis is she will get gradually worse."
Nicola added that the worst part was that Isobel is aware she is losing all her skills. Doctors say this type of case is extremely rare and that Isobel will lose her ability to communicate with her family as well.
Medics have given this girl just over 15 years to live, meaning she may not live to see her 30th birthday.
