A study by the Pew Center says that one in five U.S. children do not get annual dental examinations done. Additionally the report said that many states do not have the infrastructure to implement cost-saving preventive programs.

"Americans will be spending $106 billion on dental care this year," said Shelly Gehshan, director of the Pew Children's Dental Campaign. She added that a majority of the money was spent on costly treatments like root canals, which could be prevented with adequate attention during childhood.

The report also found that programs to apply cavity-preventing sealants to children's molars were available in just 17 states, while fluoridated water was supplied in just 26 states. Just six states received "A" grade for their dental health policies.
