What is Hepatopulmonary Syndrome ?  

Hepatopulmonary Syndrome is a combination of shortness of breath and hypoxemia caused by broadening of the blood vessels in the lungs of patients with liver disease.


Cause(s) :  Chronic and acute liver failure can cause formation of microscopic intrapulmonary arteriovenous dilations.

Symptoms :  
  • Shortness of breath
  • Hypoxemia
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Echocardiogram
  • Pulse oximetry
  • Arterial blood gases
  • Pulmonary angiography
