What is Churg-strauss Syndrome ?  

Churg-Strauss syndrome is an autoimmune condition characterized by blood vessel inflammation.Blood flow to vital organs and tissues could be restricted and in some cases it can lead to permanent damage of these organs. The disease occurs in three stages, namely, allergic stage, eosinophillic stage and vasculitic stage.


Cause(s) :  
  • The cause of Churg-Strauss syndrome is not clearly elucidated.
Symptoms :  
    Symptoms during allergic stage:
  • Hay fever/ Allergic rhinitis
  • Asthma
  • Sinusitis
  • Symptoms during Eosinophilic stage:
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss and fatigue
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Symptoms during Vasculitic stage:
  • Skin sores
  • Swelling and pain in joints
  • Numbness and tingling in extremities (peripheral neuropathy)
  • Severe abdominal pain and distress
  • Coughing up blood
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Blood in urine
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Blood count
  • Hypertension
  • Tests for Numbness of extremities
  • Presence of white blood cells outside the blood vessels
  • Biopsy of affected tissue
  • Chest X-ray
  • CT scan of chest
