What is Toxic Shock Syndrome ?  

A rare, life-threatening complication arising from certain types of bacterial infections.


Cause(s) :  
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Group A streptococcus bacteria
Symptoms :  
  • High fever
  • Low systolic blood pressure
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Sunburn-like rash, usually on palms and soles
  • Muscle aches
  • Redness in eyes, mouth and throat
  • Headache
  • Seizure
  • Confusion
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Laboratory analysis
  • Culture of swabs from vagina, cervix and throat
  • CT scan
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Chest X-ray
