What is Acute Radiation Syndrome ?  

Acute radiation syndrome occurs when a person is exposed to a high dose of external penetrating radiation within a short time period. Usually more than 1 Gy.


Cause(s) :  
  • High Radiation Exposure
Symptoms :  
Symptoms appear within hours or weeks depending on the dose of the radiation.

Radiation exposure:
12 hours post-exposure:
  • Vomiting
24 hours post-exposure:
  • Prostration (extreme exhaustion)
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
Later
  • Petechial hemorrhage
  • Hypotension
  • Tachycardia
  • Profuse bloody diarrhea, maybe death.
Diagnosis and Tests :  Immediate medical care should be given for the person who is exposed to radiation attack/accident.
