What is Jaundice?

Jaundice is the yellow discoloration of the skin and the whites of the eyes. It is caused by a build-up of a substance called Bilirubin. In many cases, yellowness in the white part of the eyes is more obvious than in the skin. Jaundice in newborn babies is common as their livers take time to get working properly.

The three types of jaundice that affects adults are:
  • Hemolytic jaundice

  • Hepatocellular jaundice and

  • Obstructive jaundice

Common Causes of Jaundice

The red blood cells after a period of 4 months' time becomes fragile and become a yellow-colored chemical called Bilirubin. The body usually removes bilirubin from the bloodstream by passing it through the liver and to the kidneys for disposal. The liver, which plays a vital role in removing the bilirubin from the body, may not be able to do so for some reasons, where the bilirubin gets accumulated and causes jaundice.

A person diagnosed with jaundice , who was under treatment was subjected to a home remedy too.The process involves ,taking a new sewing needle, move it around and over the person's body without actually touching his body.Subsequently the needle was kept immersed in water kept in a silver cup. After 24 hours , it was observed that the water in the silver cup had suspended yellow colored particles.Everyday the water in the cup was changed and the process was repeated. As the days passed the quantity of suspended yellow particles diminished and so also the bilirubin level in blood of the affected person. Can anyone explain about this phenomenon.I have seen it happen with my son .
