Types of Almond Oil
There are two types of almond oils - bitter almond oil and sweet almond oil.
Bitter almond oil is extracted from the bitter almonds that are short and broader in shape. The oils extracted from bitter almonds have a strong smell and are used in aromatherapy to blend in the room but they should not be used on the skin. Glycoside amygdalin present in bitter almonds when treated with water and an enzyme releases glucose, hydrocyanic acid (prussic acid)and benzaldehyde. These substances are toxic and should not be consumed or used internally. They are taken under the physician's or doctor’s advice only.
The toxic and bitter taste of almond oil makes it suitable to add in medicines as they have bactericidal, vermicidal, anesthetic, diuretic and anti-carcinogenic properties in them. Bitter almond oil cannot be called nutritional but possesses many medicinal properties.
The sweet almond oil comes from the edible almond or the almond we love to eat. They are edible, nutritional and can be consumed with food items and milk. They are not only very good for overall health but are also good for the skin and hair. They are widely used in cosmetics for their vitamin E and omega-6 fatty acids. Sweet almond oil is good for skin and hair as they prevent the symptoms of early signs of aging. Sweet almond oil can be purchased anywhere in the supermarkets or food store.
