Ovulation Pain
Pain and discomfort experienced by some women during the time of ovulation is called ovulation pain or "mittelschmerz" or mid-cycle pain.
Some women experience pain and discomfort during the time of ovulation which is called ovulation pain or "Mittelschmerz" or mid-cycle pain. Ovulation pain is centered on the lower right or left side of the abdomen. The pain is usually mild to moderate and does not interfere with woman's daily activities. Often, this pain is confused with the pain caused by appendicitis.

In addition, the woman may also suffer from nausea, headaches and migraine associated with the pain.

Causes for Ovulation pain
The exact cause for ovulation pain is unknown. However, following theories have been suggested:
- The growing follicle may stretch the membrane of the ovary, causing the pain.
- The bursting of the mature follicle may release small amounts of fluid and blood that may irritate the abdominal lining and may cause pain.
- The fallopian tube may experience spasm during the time of ovulation and may cause pain.
Ovulation pain can be relieved to some extent by placing a heat pad on the abdomen, taking a long warm bath, relaxing or taking a nap. If the pain is severe, you need to see a doctor to rule out other health problems. The doctor may prescribe a painkiller or an oral contraceptive to treat the pain.
