Frequently Asked Questions about Leucopenia

Frequently Asked Questionss

1. If I have leucopenia, which specialist should I see?

You should see a general practitioner. However, if leucopenia is recurrent, see a hematologist.

2. Should I visit a doctor regularly once it is detected that I have leucopenia?

Yes. Frequent visits are advised till the blood count returns to normal.

3. Will I be more prone to fungal infections, if I have leucopenia?

Yes. That’s because of decreased white blood cells, which have the ability to fight diseases. So, the patient is more prone to fungal and other opportunistic infections.

4. Apart from blood culture, is there any other way to isolate infection in such patients?

Yes. Throat swabs, sputum and urine can be tested for infection depending on the suspected site of infection.
