Glossary

Adenoma: General term for a benign tumor of a gland.

Hyperplasia: An abnormal increase in the number of cells in an organ or tissue.

Hypercalcemia: Abnormally high blood calcium.

Hypocalcemia: Abnormally low blood calcium.

Parathyroidectomy: Surgery to remove the parathyroid gland.

Peptic ulcer: An open sore on the lining of the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum. An ulcer of the stomach is called a gastric ulcer; an ulcer in the duodenum, a duodenal ulcer.
