How can Torticollis be Treated?
The treatment of torticollis is targeted to relax the contracted neck muscles involved.
Treatment of congenital torticollis (infants and children)
- Positioning of the neck- The head and neck of the baby is positioned and supported to gain the normal posture.
- Passive stretching - Stretching is done to lengthen the shortened muscles of the neck.
Treatment of acquired torticollis (adults)
- Muscle relaxants and NSAIDs for pain relief.
- Botulinum toxin injections provide temporary relief from torticollis. The injections have to be repeated every 3months.
- Anti-cholinergic drugs
- Treatment of the underlying causes for torticollis, as in the case of tumor, sprain or injury in neck.
Physiotherapy
It is aimed to relieve pain and to aid relaxation of the tight muscles. Hot packs, neck massage, passive stretching, neck collars and ice massage can be helpful.
Alternative Therapy
- Acupuncture and homeopathic medicine can also provide relief for those suffering from torticollis.
- Antispasmodic herbs can help relax muscles and help balance the stimulus from the nervous system.
Surgery
Surgery is performed in patients with severe deformity (like dislocated vertebrae) and when the conservative treatment fails. Surgery is done to release the shortened muscles of the neck causing deformity. In some cases, the surgery involves destroying some of the upper neck nerves.
