Glossary

Diabetes Mellitus: A group of disorder in which there is a defect in the transfer of glucose (sugar) from the blood stream into cells leading to abnormally high levels of blood sugar (hyperglycemia).

Acidosis: Too much acid in the blood of a person.

Adult respiratory distress syndrome: A life threatening condition in which inflammation of the lungs and accumulation of fluid in the air sacs lead to low blood oxygen levels.

Type 1 diabetes: A chronic disease in which the pancreas makes little or no insulin because the beta cells have been destroyed. Therefore, the body cells are unable to use glucose for energy. It is also known as juvenile onset diabetes or ketosis prone diabetes mellitus or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

Ketones: The end products of fat metabolism.

Ketoacidosis: A disturbance of body chemistry seen in starvation or as a complication of insulin dependent diabetes.
