Glossary

Goldenhar syndrome: A syndrome with diminution in size of one half of the face, along with dermolipoma and dermoid (tumors on the surface of the eyeball) and ear abnormalities.

Treacher-Collins syndrome: a syndrome that affects the bones and tissues of the face.

Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome): A syndrome where some or all the cells in the body have an extra chromosome 13.

Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome): A syndrome where the cells in the body are associated with an extra chromosome 18.

Toxoplasmosis: An infectious disease caused by a microscopic parasite found in infected, undercooked meat and the feces of cats.

Cytomegalovirus: A virus that may be carried in an inactive state for life by healthy individuals. It is a cause of severe pneumonia in people with a suppressed immune system, such as those undergoing bone marrow transplantation or those with leukemia or lymphoma.

Uvea: Layer of the eye beneath the sclera, consisting of the iris, ciliary body and choroid.

Retinal detachment: Separation of the light sensitive layer of the eye from its attachment to the underlying tissues

Cataract: Clouding of the lens of the eye or its capsule.

Subluxation of the lens: Partial displacement of the lens of the eye from its original position.
