Targeting Viral Replication in Gut May Help Treat HIV-AIDS

Although anti-retroviral therapy (ART) for HIV has been shown to be very effective in reducing viral load in the bloodstream, the virus persists and multiplies in cells such as CD4+ T-cells in other tissues. Such cells that continue to harbor the virus are termed "viral reservoirs". Supplementing standard ART with mTOR inhibiting treatments for HIV could offer better chances of cure for the patient according to a recent study.
