Breastfeeding should ideally begin within an hour of birth. This early contact between the mother and the baby promotes 'bonding' which is very critical in the long-term. Breast milk contains all the necessary nutrients for the baby's healthy development. In addition, it contains protective antibodies that prevent neonatal diarrhea and respiratory infections.
