WHO:Children awaiting treatment in Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago's Hematology/ Oncology and Infusion Clinic, and Clowns from the famed Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown Alley…
WHAT:will explore the medicinal properties of laughter (and giggles, and grins, and guffaws), as part of a cross-country Laughter Is The Best Medicine Tour, a partnership between The Greatest Show On Earth and Beads of Courage. Beads of Courage is an innovative, non-profit arts-in-medicine program, created to strengthen resilience in children coping with serious illness. Through the Beads of Courage program, children record, tell and own their stories of courage by stringing beads to represent significant treatment milestones during their journey.
The red-nosed, floppy-shoed Ringling Bros. contingent will not only clown around with the young patients, and maybe even teach them a circus trick or two, they will also present the children with special Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Beads of Courage and work alongside the children to string their new beads: the Elephant bead for strength; the Horse bead for stamina; the Ringmaster bead for narration and unity; the Tiger bead for energy; the Acrobat bead for agility and coordination, and of course, the Clown bead for making every moment count through laughter!
WHEN:11:00 - 11:45 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012
WHERE:Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, 225 E. Chicago Ave., ChicagoHematology/Oncology and Infusion Clinic, 18th floorMedia check in on 2nd floor by concierge desk.
FUN FACTS:Scientists have found that laughter can be a form of internal aerobics that exercises the body and stimulates the release of beneficial brain neurotransmitters and hormones. Children on average laugh 400 times a day, while adults laugh a mere 15 times a day. By learning to smile and laugh, more easily and often, we can have a profound and positive effect on our health and well-being. Positive outlook and laughter is actually good for our health!
