Reducing added sugars can help reduce weight and risk of chronic disease.

GILBERT, Ariz., Sept. 17, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- As the year winds down, thoughts turn to the holiday season, replete with its many food and drink temptations, as well as New Year's resolutions to erase the inevitable weight gain. For many Americans, setting goals for the new year includes the desire to begin healthier eating patterns, which encourage a healthy body weight and help prevent and reduce chronic disease, according to the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP). There's no better time than now to enter the holiday season with a healthier weight and diet.

"Dietary Guidelines for Americans," published by the ODPHP, helps Americans make healthy choices for themselves and their families. The 2015-2020 guidelines focus on preventing diet-related chronic diseases that affect about half of all American adults, about 117 million people. Recommendations include choosing a healthy eating pattern and appropriate calorie intake to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight and limit calories from added sugars.

Reducing added sugars in the diet reduces cardiovascular risk. According to the American Heart Association, 80% of cardiovascular events are preventable with education and lifestyle changes. A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention similarly found that about 80% of deaths from coronary artery disease are preventable with dietary and lifestyle changes. And according to JAMA Internal Medicine, consuming 10% or more of daily calories from added sugars brings a 30% increased risk for cardiovascular disease-related death; 25% of daily calories from added sugars nearly triples the risk.

"Americans are becoming more aware of added sugars in the foods and beverages they consume and, as a result, want to cut down on added sugars to benefit their health. In fact, according to Food Marketing Institute (FMI), 68 percent of American adults want to cut down on added sugars," said Carol May, CEO of Wisdom Natural Brands, maker of the SweetLeaf® Stevia Sweetener family of products. "With the health and well-being of millions of Americans at stake, it's clearly time for everyone to do whatever is necessary to effect a positive change. Reducing added sugars in foods and beverages is a great first step."
