article in The Los Angeles Times discussed a recent study from Sweden which showed that patients who had bariatric surgery saw their risk of getting skin cancer decline 42% over the course of the study. The study compared 2,007 obese patients who choose to undergo bariatric surgery, along with 2,040 participants who were deemed to be similar to the first group, yet did not elect to have weight loss surgery. The group conducting the study did not come to a clear consensus as to why the drop in risk occurred, but posited that deep weight loss (the reduction in visceral fat stored around the vital organs) was the most likely cause.
