Through Updox solutions, Komen Columbus can continue their work to support improved access to care, education outreach and better outcomes. With the Updox Collaboration Platform, Komen Columbus staff will be able to manage paperwork electronically in a secure, cost-effective manner. With Updox Engagement solutions, they're able to send voice, text or email appointment reminders to patients to encourage attendance at appointments or therapies. Broadcast messages can be used to let women know about upcoming screenings or educational programs. Providers can share test results, answer questions or send patient educational information via secure text. Updox Communications solutions support secure provider communications to connect care teams and improve information exchange. In the future, Updox Video Chat will be used by providers seeking cost-effective ways to reach breast cancer patients in remote areas to provide consultative and educational services.

"Anytime we're able to use a tool for earlier detection, increased education, faster consultation or better communication, we'll definitely take advantage of that. It's well documented that better patient engagement leads to better outcomes," says Katie Carter, executive director, Komen Columbus. Communication, education and engagement are all vitally important to breast cancer patients, their families and care teams. This is a battle we all face together."

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer for women, with one in eight United States women diagnosed in their lifetime. The number of deaths due to breast cancer has decreased by 40% from 1989 to 2015, attributed to advances in treatment technology and early detection. Additionally, conversations about detection and disease management also play a role in earlier, more treatable diagnosis and prevention.

Patient engagement programs are vital as studies show that patients who are actively engaged in their care and connected to their care teams, including receiving appointment reminders and educational information, experience better health, improved care experiences, and lower healthcare costs.

Komen Columbus looks forward to implementing the Updox platform to support a full-time community health worker based in Southeast Ohio. Generously funded by a gift from the American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation, the community health worker's objective will be to expand Komen Columbus' outreach in southeast Ohio as well as increase patient access to a mobile mammography unit – also partially funded by the AEP Foundation, located at the Nelsonville Health Center. These efforts, coupled with the Updox platform, will create an efficient and productive process that ensures more eligible women are receiving the care they both need and deserve.
