The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics wants people to "Eat Right, Bite by Bite" in March.

SALT LAKE CITY, March 31, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Celebrated each March, the 2020 iteration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' National Nutrition Month® invites people to focus on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. The theme is "Eat Right, Bite by Bite." The message is simple: Even small dietary changes can have a big impact on health.

Each week of the 2020 National Nutrition Month® shares a distinct message about healthy living and diet choices.

  • Week one instructs people to "eat a variety of nutritious foods every day." This entails including foods from all food groups, hydrating well, practicing portion control and adopting healthy dietary habits—such as eating slowly.
  • Week two asks people to "plan meals each week." Meal planning can be challenging. But using a grocery list to shop for healthy foods and choosing healthful recipes can help simplify the decision of choosing wholesome options. Additionally, being menu-savvy when eating out can make a difference to overall health.
  • Week three invites individuals to "learn skills to create tasty meals." Trying new flavors and foods can be an effective way to make eating healthy more satisfying.
  • Week four encourages people to "consult a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN)." An RDN can provide those with unique needs personalized nutrition advice to meet their goals—and show others how to thrive with a healthy diet.
These suggestions, in part, mirror those established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. According to the department's MyPlate guide, a healthy diet requires fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy and protein every day. However, with American's busy lifestyles, it can be challenging to meet the recommendations of MyPlate.
