TAMPA, Fla., April 24, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Florida Hospital West Florida Division now has a perfect score card in patient safety and quality, and is the only hospital system in the Tampa Bay Area that earned the highest rating for all of its hospitals that participated in the survey. Today, the prestigious Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit health care ratings organization, announced its 2018 Hospital Safety Grades, and all seven participating hospitals in Florida Hospital West Florida Division received an A including Florida Hospital Carrollwood, Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center Lake Placid, Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center Sebring, Florida Hospital North Pinellas, Florida Hospital Tampa, Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, Florida Hospital Zephyrhills.

The Safety Grade assigns letter grades of A, B, C, D and F to hospitals nationwide based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms.

"The growth and expansion of Florida Hospital West Florida Division isn't just about bringing our brand of health care to more Florida communities, it's also about delivering the best and safest care to every patient, every time," said Mike Schultz, President and CEO, Florida Hospital, West Florida Division. "This is a milestone for Florida Hospital West Florida Division, and one that we could not have achieved without the commitment and dedication of our employees," said Schultz.

Florida Hospital has a long running history of making "A" grades. This will be the 10th consecutive "A" safety rating for Florida Hospital North Pinellas, which holds the longest straight "A" streak in the Tampa Bay area. Florida Hospital North Pinellas has also received the Top General Hospital award twice, and is the only hospital in the state of Florida to receive the Top General Hospital award back-to-back for 2016 and 2017.

Only 45 hospitals in the country receive the designation of Top General Hospital. The award assures patients they are at a hospital with better systems in place to prevent medication errors, higher quality on maternity care and high-risk procedures, and lower readmission rates.

Florida Hospital Carrollwood was also named a Top General Hospital in 2017 and has received an "A" grade from the Leapfrog Group six consecutive times since 2015.

Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center in Lake Placid has received seven consecutive "A" safety grades and Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel has received six consecutive "A" grades in patient safety and quality.

Additionally, Florida Hospital Wauchula is a four-time past recipient of the Top Rural Hospital Award from the Leapfrog Group, most recently in 2017.

Florida Hospital voluntarily participates in the Leapfrog assessment and provides full transparency to our hospitals and our data to patient safety experts for review. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade measures 27 areas of hospital safety and scores hospitals with A, B, C, D and F grades based on that data.

"We are proud of our teams who continue on this journey of patient safety with us, and who provide exceptional and safe care to our patients," said Dr. Robin McGuinness, Senior Executive Officer of Patient Outcomes, Florida Hospital, West Florida Division. "We want to maintain these A's and continue to make sure as the West Florida Division grows, that all of our hospitals follow the guidelines The Leapfrog Group sets as the standard for safe practices," said McGuinness.

The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive. To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must submit a Leapfrog Hospital Survey. The selection of Top Hospitals 2017 is based on surveys from nearly 1,900 hospitals. *Florida Hospital Dade City did not participate in the Leapfrog assessment this spring due to timing of the April acquisition.
