HIEs require clean, reliable clinical data to meet the needs of their healthcare provider and payer members and the patients they serve. In the U.S., HIEs form key interoperability links between patients, providers and health plans, representing (in total) over 880 million ambulatory visits, 145 million ER visits, and 24 million hospital stays annually, according to the CDC National Center for Health Statistics. However, the wide variation in clinical information documented by over 4 million clinicians in more than 100 certified Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems makes it nearly impossible to fully leverage clinical data in downstream systems such as quality reporting or population health analytics.
