LEXINGTON, Mass., June 4 Ipswitch, Inc.'s NetworkManagement division, the leading developer of network management software, announced today that Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital (PPMH), a 450-bedteaching hospital in southwest Georgia, is using Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold PremiumEdition for predictive network management and monitoring of critical ITinfrastructure. PPMH is complying with HIPAA requirements and preventingunauthorized access to patient health information at the network level byusing WhatsUp Gold to securely monitor its more than 1,000 networked devicesand automatically alert network administrators when anomalies occur.

As healthcare organizations work to comply with HIPAA, network managementsoftware must provide absolute security for network connections so servicesand equipment are protected. In the case of PPMH, more than 21,000 admissionsand more than 53,000 yearly visits to the emergency department are logged intheir networked systems. Data for each activity needs to be protected as partof growing HIPAA regulations. To aid with HIPAA compliance, WhatsUp Gold isused to detect and prevent any malicious traffic including virus and wormoutbreaks in order to keep the network secure. The software also gives PPMH areal-time look at the status of its network.

"Before we started to use Ipswitch we were very reactive in our approach,"said Michael Elder, director of technical services, PPMH. "WhatsUp gives us areal-time picture of what's up and what's down so we can manage our networkproactively. We installed it with just our IT staff and we didn't have toinvest in additional head count to operate it. We love WhatsUp Gold."

At PPMH, a hospital that has grown through regional acquisition, WhatsUpGold has been instrumental in providing consistent, easy-to-administermanagement and monitoring interfaces to meet PPMH's needs. To date, thehospital has 300 affiliated physicians, a staff of more than 3,500 and asecond hospital facility 30 miles away. PPMH's IT department is able toprovide constant vigilance against emerging vulnerabilities, supply detailedreports for reviewing network behaviour and offer the highest level ofprotection at the industry's lowest total cost of ownership.
