The initiative began in mid-November and will continue to run through the close of January; in the meantime, DentServ encourages holiday shoppers to join in and embrace the giving spirit by donating new socks of all sizes to their drive.
Already, DentServ's community efforts have drawn support from fellow businesses. The Allure Group, a well-established provider of skilled nursing and rehabilitation services in New York City, was one of the first companies to offer a hand in partnership.
"As soon as I heard of this drive, I felt that it was such a wonderful way to give back," Melissa Powell, The Allure Group's Chief Operations Officer, explained when asked about the company's participation. "I immediately reached out to DentServ's COO, Isaac Newman, to offer our facilities as drop-off locations."
New or still-packaged and unused socks can be dropped off at any of The Allure Group's many care centers or shipped to DentServ's headquarters in Pelham Manor, New York.
All donations, regardless of whether the gift is one pair of socks or ten, will be wholeheartedly appreciated. Socks top the list as the most requested item at homeless shelters, above blankets, jackets, or even food - and yet, they often remain in short supply. Having clean socks is more than comfort; it's a necessity for health and human dignity.
According to research compiled by the Community West Foundation, frostbite can occur in as little as thirty minutes during the winter season. If the temperatures plummet to sub-zero levels, that number can drop to just ten minutes. This is especially problematic for housing-insecure individuals, given that they often walk miles every day to access the food, shelter, and care that those with homes don't think twice about having on hand. A simple pair of clean socks can help ward off disease and empower their wearers to live in comfort, confidence, and dignity.
