Through the state's Public Mental Health System, beginning Sept. 1 ValueOptions(R) will manage behavioral health services for 708,000 Medicaid enrollees and 100,000 people receiving mental health care through PMHS.

"We're pleased to bring our information technology efficiencies to the state of Maryland," ValueOptions(R) Maryland CEO Mary Mastrandrea said. "We will streamline state claims processes as well as the provider registration and authorization processes. The efficiencies gained in the administration of mental health benefits has saved the state and taxpayers money at a time when the state budget faces myriad demands."

ValueOptions(R) will implement in Maryland innovative technologies, such as its PharmaConnect and JailConnect programs. With PharmaConnect, the company scours its database for a person's prescription records, checks them against medical conditions and interactions with other drugs, and then reports the results to the physicians handling the treatment.

"This way, the consumer gets individually tailored treatment plans, and everyone involved knows the course of action," Mastrandrea said.

In JailConnect, ValueOptions(R) receives booking data from jails, searches its databases to see if the new inmate is receiving treatment, and forwards the person's up-to-date information to make sure treatment is continuous.

The company will offer its Web-based system and Interactive Voice Response System to help providers determine eligibility, benefits and enroll consumers.

"By bringing ground-breaking programs and the efficiencies of our information technology," Mastrandrea said, "we are confident we can improve access to Maryland consumers."

ValueOptions(R) has a two-year contract with Maryland's Mental Hygiene Administration (MHA), which operates, finances and regulates the state's Public Mental Health System.

"We're excited to be in Maryland," Mastrandrea said, "and we look forward to working with consumers and providers -- and to a productive collaboration with the state."
