Costs of Care launches annual contest to drive innovation in high-value care

BOSTON, May 15, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Costs of Care and the ABIM Foundation today announced the launch of

the 2018 Costs of Care Value Challenge, which seeks innovative ideas and projects for teaching and implementing high-value care among collaborative teams of clinicians, educators, quality improvement specialists and health system administrators.

Healthcare professionals from any discipline and level of training are invited to submit short abstracts that describe either a project they have already implemented or an idea for a project they believe could have promise in delivering better care at a lower cost. Entries will be accepted through September 15, 2018.

Winning innovators will be announced in October 2018, and Costs of Care and the ABIM Foundation will recognize the awardees at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) National Forum in December 2018.

Challenge inspires change "Across the country, healthcare providers are finding creative ways to address the growing challenges Americans face in affording care. We're excited to learn from these innovators and help share their insights broadly," said Neel Shah, MD, Founder and Executive Director of Costs of Care.

The Challenge builds on the ABIM Foundation's Choosing Wisely® campaign, a national effort that encourages clinicians and patients to have conversations about avoiding unnecessary tests and treatments. Last year's Challenge amassed over 80 diverse submissions with Creating Value winners focused on implementing high-value care in clinical practice and Teaching Value winners focused on improving medical education curricula around delivering high-value care.

"The Value Challenge has been a great initiative for encouraging innovators to share their ideas for improving value in health care. We are all winners when we create opportunities to advance and support new approaches to reducing unnecessary care," said Richard J. Baron, President and CEO of the ABIM Foundation.

This year, Value Challenge finalists will be selected by a panel of experts in value-based health care and winners will be selected by an esteemed panel comprised of national healthcare leaders:

  • Karen DeSalvo – recent Acting Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and currently Professor of Medicine and Population Health at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School
  • Kedar Mate – Chief Innovation and Education Officer at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and a research professor at Weill Cornell Medical College
  • David Sklar – Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Department of Emergency Medicine at University of New Mexico School of Medicine and the current Editor-in-Chief of Academic Medicine
